Welcome

Kia ora koutou,

Welcome to Grasslands Kindergarten Literacy for Life blog. This site has been constructed for parents and whaanau so you can gain information about literacy. You may also leave comments and questions on this site that we will endeavour to answer for you.

What is literacy?

In simple terms literacy relates to communication and understanding through the skills of reading, writing, speaking, listening and viewing. However literacy moves beyond this to include the complexity of being able to use and understand the language and symbols of social and cultural contexts.

To give you an example of what this means think of mobile phones. A whole new language known as txting has evolved as a result of this modern technology. Similarly our daily interactions with others require different literacies. For example how you may address your best friends in conversation would be very different than how you may speak to your doctor and the language changes to suit the situation. We have to learn this language in order to communicate successfully with others.

New literacies are evolving at a faster pace than ever before so have the foundations of reading, writing, listening and viewing become evermore critical.
